Purpose of research: Applied research

The study of soil-borne viruses in Schleswig-Holstein shows an increasing distribution of Soil-borne wheat mosaic virus (SBWMV) in wheat and rye growing areas in this federal state of Germany. This virus is spread since 2006 in wheat and rye growing areas in different regions (Golecki et al., 2012) of this federal state. Whereas the Nebraska (N) strain of this virus was found in Southern Germany, the New York (NY) strain is present in Northern Germany (Ziegler et al., 2012). Selective wheat cultivars were screened for resistance to this virus under greenhouse conditions in an infested soil sample with the aim to develop recommendations for growers. As a result of our work, the cultivation of the wheat cultivars Farandole, Hyland, Mirage and Carenius is recommended for SBWMV-NY affected fields (Kastirr et al., 2012). In the context of responsibilities of public administration a triennial project 'Occurrence and damage of Soil-borne wheat mosaic virus - NY (SBWMV-NY) in winter wheat' was started in 2013 in cooperation with the Landwirtschaftskammer Schleswig-Holstein, Abteilung Pflanzenbau, Pflanzenschutz und Umwelt, Referat Marktfruchtbau/Getreide (Dr. Obenauf, Dr. Golecki) and the company R.A.D.T. (Hilmar Cöster). The project aim is to assess the virus resistance and the yield losses caused by soil-borne viruses in standard cultivars of the actual wheat assortment in an affected field in Westerrade. These results are enabling recommendations for wheat cultivation in infested fields and for the breeding of virus resistant wheat cultivars.
