Biodiversity of aroma patterns in carrots (Daucus carota L.)

Purpose of research: Basic research
Terpenes are important secondary metabolites in carrots. These compounds influence both sensory quality and resistance. During domestication and breeding the terpene patterns underlie a genetical erosion. To prevent a depletion of important traits by breeding analytical and genetical knowledge is necessary. During the project the biodiversity of terpene patterns of roots and leaves are examined systematically using gene bank accessions and cultivars. The inheritance of selected terpenoid compounds is studied on experimental populations. The analysis of terpenes is focused on compounds which were objects of genome mapping in a former project (BAZ-1234). The interactions between quality and resistance are studied using a complex of methods (gas chromatography, HPLC, human sensory – QDA, resistance tests). Furthermore for the analysis of terpenes, innovative methods, so called non-targeted methods, are used to cover new substances.
