Physiological investigations on photosynthetic capacity and water use efficiency of poplar clones of different ploidy

Project

Project code: ZALF-690
Contract period: 01.10.2011 - 30.09.2014
Purpose of research: Applied research

The following topics will be focused on: How does different ploidy influence plant growth? Are there any relationships between poplar plant ploidy and photosynthesis and water use efficiency of leaves? The cloned plant material will be generated in the Institute of Forest Genetics of the vTI. At ZALF-Institute of Landscape Matter Dynamics, specific leaf area (SLA), photosynthetic capacity and transpiration of fully developed leaves will be measured, and the water use efficiency will be calculated. Mesophyll conductance will be determined on a subset of the plants, providing a more complete picture of plant physiology. The plants of genetic lines exhibiting the best photosynthetic capacity and water use efficiency will placed under moderate drought stress in the third year during which the measurements will be repeated.
