Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Within a context of changing ecological, economic, and social conditions, this joint research project aims to develop the foundations for informed decision making for sustainable land management in the North German Plain. Focusing on four model regions (Diepholz, Uelzen, Fläming, Oder-Spree), project tasks include the analysis of regional characteristics; cause-effect chains; a scenario-based development evaluation; an inter- and transdisciplinary generation of adaptation strategies; and a quantitative assessment of their impact with the use of trans-sectoral indicators for sustainable land management. Implementation of the research as well as a close connection to practitioners will be assured through an intensive participation of relevant stakeholders within as well as outside the model regions. The discourse between science and practice will focus on revealing interrelations between different land use systems, strengthen the balance of interests and improve the general capacity of rural regions to shape their own sustainable future. The subproject “Regional Implementation” identifies current and future guiding principles of regional land users in all four model regions through the application of various participatory instruments. In a second stage, the objective of the subproject is to jointly establish procedures for the development of sustainable land management strategies through a comprehensive mutual transfer of knowledge between scientific partners and practitioners.
