Alternative fresh vegetable crops for organic vegetable production through the use of polytunnels with focus during the winter season

Project

Project code: 2811OE038
Contract period: 01.06.2014 - 31.05.2017
Budget: 209,842 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Winter was traditionally the season for growing cabbages in temperate zones, as cabbage is easy to store and provides many vitamins and nutrients. This trend has been declining in recent years in both organic and conventional agriculture, whilst the demand for fresh vegetables has been steadily increasing. In winter these are either imported or grown in heated greenhouses. Both systems are characterized by high energy consumption. Given rising energy prices and the ecological footprint this situation is undesirable in organic agriculture. The aim of the project is to develop an alternative selection of fresh vegetables to allow producers to extend and enhance their range of products.
