Adaptation strategies of forest hygiene facing an increasing potential of pathogens in vulnerable regions with regard to climate change and the growing number of restrictions. Subproject 6 (WAHYKLAS)

Project

Project code: 28WC403106
Contract period: 01.01.2014 - 30.06.2017
Budget: 579,865 Euro
Purpose of research: Networks and research co-ordination

Precipitation deficits caused by geographical and seasonal effects lead to a growing risk of abiotic and biotic stress for forest ecosystems (such as drought, fire, pest infestations, or disease). This effect is explicitly men-tioned in the current IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) assessment report on climate change as accelerating factors influencing the predicted emission scenarios. To date, the negative effects of global climate change on the state of health of local forest areas are already disclosed in a diverse and alarming fashion. The project WAHYKLAS aims to develop concepts for sustainable forest hygiene based on findings identified in representative forest areas in Germany, for which a high level of vulnerability to the effects of climate change, globalization and urban agglomeration are already present or expected in future. The vulnerability of included reference areas was based mainly on the insufficient water budget, which either directly (water deficiency) or indirectly (susceptibility) impairs the growth and vitality of trees. The rise in temperature in particular enables the invasion and establishment of thermophile alien species and amplifies problems caused by indigenous spe-cies with phytosanitary significance. WAHYKLAS was planned and developed as a project for basic and applied research. It was founded by a coop-erative consortium of different public/governmental research institutions. Additionally, a close interaction with local private and public forestry organizations is a core element of the project.
