Selection of apple breeding clones with red flesh
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-4172
Contract period: 01.10.2014
- 30.09.2019
Purpose of research: Applied research
This project aims at the selection of red flesh apples useable as donors for red flesh. Background is the establishment of donors for red flesh with good quality suited for sustainable production by the value setting of genetic resources. Both known types of red fleshed apples, type 1 and type 2, red flesh is induced by transcription factors MdMYB10 and MdMYB110a, respectively, will be used. Advanced breeding clones with high sugar and low acid content will be selected, to improve quality. Furthermore breeding clones with a break of the linkage between red flesh and the 'Internal Flesh Browning Disorder' which is typical for type 1 shall be selected by screening browning during storage, and for type 2 attractive breeding clones with yellow over color and red flesh will be selected. For this purpose segregating progenies using different donors for red flesh were established.
This project supports the topics of the BMEL regarding sustainable agriculture, breeding and the use of genetic resources to create more biodiversity.
