Collaborative project: Molecular analysis of grapevine cluster architecture. Coordination

Project

Project code: 2811NA056
Contract period: 01.10.2014 - 30.09.2017
Budget: 227,511 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

This project elaborated important phenotypic criteria and genetic basic knowledge for the complex trait of grapevine cluster architecture. Extensive phenotypic characterization highlighted the length of the rachis, the length of the pedicels and the berry size as important determinants of cluster architecture. Genetic factors for these determinants could be localized as quantitative trait loci (QTL) in a trait-segregating cross population. In clones of ‛Pinot Noir’ and loosely clustered genotypes of the segregating population there is an early developmental phase with differential growth rates that leads to the desired trait of loose cluster structure due to enhanced growth. In case of the ‛Pinot noir’ clones a molecular difference was identified that significantly affects this process. Several additional candidate genes were identified that play a role in the development of loose/compact bunches.
