Collaborative project: Development of physical and chemical methods to repel voles – Subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2814200406
Contract period: 01.06.2007 - 30.06.2010
Budget: 116,972 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Common voles can cause enormous damage on plants, this problem is wide spread and difficult to resolve in horticulture and agriculture. In an research cooperation of the Julius Kühn-Institute (JKI), the company Neudorff and the Institute of Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology of the university Heidelberg a new integrated plant protection method should be developed up to be ready for practical purposes. During the course of the project studies in the laboratory and field provided successful results for a product based on secondary plant metabolites to repel water voles. Two tasting agents were found that repelled water voles when applied as pruning paint. Moreover four fragrance compounds could be identified that repelled water voles at laboratory conditions. In field tests two compounds repelled common voles when applied as foam. Such repellents should help to reduce damages caused by water and common voles and also minimize the use of traps and rodenticides thereby reducing the risk to damage non-target organisms. Furthermore repellents are price-competitive and easy to handle.
