Collaborative project: Breeding methodology for exploitation of heterosis in wheat - subproject 14 (ZUCHTWERT)

Project

Project code: 2814605213
Contract period: 01.09.2014 - 15.12.2019
Budget: 127,159 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The main goal of the project is the elaboration of the breeding methodology for a systematic exploitation of heterosis in hybrid wheat. The work comprises the establishment of heterotic groups with a high combining ability, the development of hybrid prediction approaches, and the use of reciprocal recurrent genomic selection. Within the framework of the ZUCHTWERT project, partners from academia and industry with a worldwide unique know-how, genetic material and hybrid technology will intensively cooperate. The project is structured into four work packages. In WP 1, parental elite lines adapted to the growing conditions in Germany will be used to produce ~ 3500 hybrids based on a balanced incomplete factorial mating design using specific crossing blocks. The hybrids and their parental lines will be evaluated in multi-location field trials across several years for important agronomic traits. The lines will be genotyped with high-density molecular markers. Using the genomic and phenotypic data, hybrid prediction approaches will be developed. These prediction models are then used to identify heterotic groups in adapted elite wheat lines. In WP 2, the search for promising heterotic groups will be extended to exotic germplasm and 300 accessions will be selected for hybrid seed production out of more than 2000 genetic resources. The hybrids and their parental lines will be examined as outlined for WP 1 in order to develop hybrid prediction approaches. These prediction models are then used to identify heterotic groups among exotic and adapted wheat lines. WP 3 complements these activities through the proof-of-concept of reciprocal recurrent genomic selection to accelerate the development of heterotic groups. In WP 4, a wheat data warehouse will be refined, which is pivotal to store and process the big data sets developed in the ZUCHTWERT project. The wheat data warehouse will then be made available to the project partners.
