Project code: JKI-ZL-08-2197
Contract period: 01.03.2005 - 31.12.2008
Purpose of research: Applied research

The genus Solanum consists of numerous wild species which are of interest for potato breeding since they are providing a valuable genetic resource to improve pathogen resistance. In the context of this project genetic resources are used to develop novel sources of resistance to virus diseases and late blight. Due to sexual incompatibility between wild and cultivated potato the resistance determining traits can be transferred into the Solanum tuberosum gene pool only by using biotechnological methods (cell fusion). By somatic hybridisation new potato genotypes with combined resistance are produced. This project is a subtask of the BAZ project 3128 and is focussed on the development of molecular markers to identify the somatic hybrids after cell fusion between wild and cultivated potato and plant regeneration. The resistance level of these somatic hybrids shall be determined. Selected hybrids are to be integrated into backcrossing programs. Plant genetic resources will be better and more sustainably used because of the development and utilisation of novel pathogen resistances. This project makes an important contribution to the conservation and sustainable use of the biological diversity. It is important because of the estimation of the breeding progress in terms of improving plant resistance to the most devastating pathogens of potato.
