Creation of new variability of Pelargonium by using the protoplast fusion
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-1185
Contract period: 01.03.2008
- 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Applied research
In Germany, pelargoniums are one of the most popular ornamentals for pots and balcony. German breeding as well as the production of cuttings of Pelargonium has a national and international importance. The project proposed deals with the investigation of new methods for breeding research. This is of high value for gaining new scientific findings and, additionally for improvement of the genetic variability within the genus Pelargonium applicable for the breeding process. For the project realisation, results from earlier research activities will be used.
The goal of this project is the application of new parameters for a successful protoplast fusion of Pelargonium. Besides the chemical way, the method of electrofusion will be tested. First investigations for cell sorting are planned.
Protoplast fusion and the further development of protoplasts will be investigated and documented with high innovative microscope technique.
First general conditions for fusion of protoplasts from various origins as well as its successful further development concerning cell differentiation and plant regeneration will be obtained.
