Timber harvesting and transportation systems adapted altered forest structures due to climate change - SOLVE

Project

Project code: 28WB3048
Contract period: 01.01.2015 - 30.06.2018
Budget: 245,040 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The overall goal of the project is the design and modelling of wood supply chains best adapted to climate in-duced changes of environment and forest stands. Within this project timber harvesting and transportation systems will be identified or designed for adapted wood supply chains which are best adapted to changes of tree species composition and forests structures and manage-ment concepts with respect to environmental soundness and emissions. The supply chains will be evaluated from life-cycle-viewpoint regarding greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption allowing to identify „hot-spots“ within the chains. The evaluations will be carried out considering the most important tree species compositions, management systems (e.g., high and coppice forests) and site conditions (e.g., varying terrain slope). Mutual interactions of the processes will be considered. The analysis will reveal those supply chains which have positive effects to the forest´s carbon budget in a long term. Based on the results a decision matrix will be developed to support forest owners or harvesting operators in selecting the best adapted supply chain with respect to environmental soundness under given local forest conditions. Those supply chains, which are most environmental friendly and cause lowest GHG emissions, will be compiled and presented in a catalogue of favourable harvesting and transportation systems.
