Collaborative project: Optimizing the gap switching of an orchard sprayer as a pre condition for the accurate spraying of plant protection products - subproject 2 (OLSVA)

Project

Project code: 2815IP002, JKI-AT-08-1114
Contract period: 01.03.2015 - 31.12.2017
Budget: 334,894 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

As part of the three year project, the main focus was to reduce the use of plant protection products in intensive horticultural production systems for ecological and economical optimization. The aim should be pursued by developing sprayer prototypes equipped with improved sensory gap detection. During the project, three sprayers with different fan types were equipped with optimized sensors, associated with electronics and magnetic valves and then transferred for use in practice. Diverse locations with different existing intensive pest occurrence were chosen. The practical experiences showed that the amount of plant protection products can be minimized depending on the age of an orchard, the foliage during vegetation and the number of gaps. At the same time, first trials for evaluating a potential drift showed that the entry on non-target areas can be reduced. Due to time delays during the project term, no sufficiently substantiated statement could be made if the biological efficiency is enough. Finally, some weak points have to be remedied before market maturity will be reached.
