Preliminary investigations showed that the correlation of mobile copper content and total copper content is influenced by different parameters. The working thesis is, that the sum of all influence factors such as soil parameters, years of cultivation, different management practices, climatic changes, aging effects leads to site specific copper availability, which therefore will be expressed in different copper amounts of the different extracts. Different extraction processes are described in the literature. To investigate the availability of copper in soils the NH4NO3 extract (according to BBodSchV (ANONYM, 1999) and the CaCl2-Extract (according to DIN CEN, 2007) were used to describe copper available for plants and earthworms, respectively. First results show, that both extraction processes are differently correlated to the total copper content. In further studies two new extraction processes of VDLUFA (EDTA- und CAT- (CaCl2 + DTPA)) will be used for describing the availability of copper in vineyard soils sampled in the course of the biological survey in the last years. The aim of this investigation is to clarify which extracting agent used in the agricultural practice is the best to predict the copper accumulation behaviour in earthworms more valid than in NH4NO3-extract (R2 = 0.835). This is necessary for the realistic description of the real exposition and impact of copper on key indicators of soil quality and can be helpful for the risk-benefit assessment of copper containing plant protection products. The copper availability is directly related to the impact on the soil conenoses, making it a ‘key element' in the riskbenefit assessments by the regulatory authorities. The experience of the longtime studies on the load distribution in the soil in general and the studies on the behaviour, fate, exposure and effects on soil organisms in particular, that a realistic risk assessment of soil total copper contents is only possible on the basis of bio available fractions and not as previously on the basis of total contents. With obtained soil samples from conducted field studies of earthworm conenoses at 16 selected wine farms bio concentration factors of earthworm tissue were calculated and linked with help of simple regression approaches of bio available copper values to test with which normalized soil extract (Cu Extract) the copper enrichment behaviour can best be predicted. With the extract with the closest correlation between content and copper accumulation in the tissues of the earthworm communities a model approach to enforcement relevant eco-toxicological evaluation should be developed for agricultural soil on the basis of the bio available fraction for risk assessment of the effects on soil organisms.
