Contract period: 01.03.2015 - 28.02.2018
Budget: 98,052 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

"Winter wheat is one of the most important crops in Europe. The aim of MAGIC-WHEAT is the breeding of winter wheat varieties, which reveal improvements of the trait complexes yield, quality, resistance and nutrient efficiency. During the collaborative project between partners Martin-Luther-University Halle, Syngenta, RAGT, Secobra, KWS and GFPi, the population WM-800 was developed after crossing 8 leading German winter wheat varieties. In multi-location and multi-year field trials, the agronomic performance and, in parallel in the lab, DNA genotyping of the 800 WM lines was assessed. Subsequently, both data sets were combined and analyzed by means of genome-wide association studies to map QTL and to identify QTL alleles that positively regulate the agronomic properties of the WM lines. The QTL data obtained are currently used to select previously unknown genes and WM lines, which can improve the trait complexes yield, baking quality, disease resistance and nutrient efficiency. WM lines are currently tested as new varieties or used for marker-assisted selection in order to select new wheat varieties."
