Collaborative project: Improving yield potential, yield stability and seed quality of lupins as protein plants. Coordination (LupiBreed)
Project
Project code: 2814EPS009, JKI-ZL-08-3195
Contract period: 15.02.2015
- 14.02.2018
Budget: 529,597 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The overall goal of the project is to improve productivity of narrow-leafed sweet lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) and yellow sweet lupin (L. luteus) with regard to kernel yield, yield stability, and seed composition. In addition, the question shall be addressed whether the narrow genetic basis of current breeding materials may be broadened by including genebank accessions as plant genetic resources. Another task is to optimise lupin cultivation systems for non-chemical weed control. A combined approach of plant breeding and crop science will be followed to use known resistance genes for the breeding of anthracnose-resistant cultivars of L. angustifolius and L. luteus, to characterise the genetic variability of important traits retained in plant genetic re-sources, and to work out options for weed control such as crop mixtures and undersowing. In addition, breeding methods based on marker-assisted selection or high-speed and non-destructive analysis shall be developed for relevant traits such as anthracnose resistance, low shattering, raw protein and alkaloid contents, respectively. The project is expected to provide incentives to lupin breeding, to improving agricultural practice and to enhancing acceptance of lupins as protein sources for feed and food applications.
