Improvement of agronomical characters in narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius)
Project
Project code: BAZ-ILK-02-3163
Contract period: 01.01.2004
- 31.12.2006
Purpose of research: Basic research
Lupin crops are a rich source of protein, which can be used first of all as a substitute of animal protein in an animal feeding. This has become increasingly important since the mad-cow disease (BSE) has spread up in the past years, causing serious problems in Europe, both economical and political. Furthermore, some lupin crops are cultivated on poor soils and are widely used as catch crops in sustainable agriculture for soil enrichment in nitrogen. Among the three cultivated lupin species, narrow-leafed lupins are able to fill a gap especially on medium to light soils in Germany, where white and yellow lupins do not provide for stable yields. Although the narrow-leafed lupin displays a higher tolerance to anthracnose than white and yellow lupin there is a need for measures towards durable resistance to this disease. In addition, agronomic characters such as shattering resistance and pH tolerance need to be improved in narrow-leafed lupin to ensure its sustainable establishment in German agriculture. The projects aims at improving the use of plant-genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) to support the growing of narrow-leafed lupin in Germany.
