Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-632
Contract period: 01.04.2015 - 31.12.2015
Purpose of research: Applied research

Specific migration or release values are used to check the conformity of food contact materials. In accordance with regulation (EU) No 10/2011 the surface coming into contact with food of materials and articles for which, due to their form it is impracticable to estimate the relationship between the surface area of such materials or articles and the quantity of food in contact therewith, will be used for evaluation taking into account a surface to volume ratio of 6 dm2 per kg of food. Another technique, the 'envelope volume’ method for determining the surface to volume ratio of metal food contact materials was developed at the Council of Europe. Using 3D measurement technology a robust data basis will be developed for a variety of different kitchen utensils, to compare the two methods with high accuracy. The results of this comparison will help to derive possible options for the two mentioned assessment procedures.
