Purpose of research: Applied research

On the one hand birds cause great losses in agriculture by feeding seeds after sowing. On the other hand unintentional intoxications of birds can occur, if they consume toxic baits, which are applied against slugs for example. In both cases, a treatment of seeds and toxic baits, respectively, with repelling substances could avoid undesired damage to birds. In a joint project funded by the BLE, repellents from plant extracts were developed, which could serve as a protection against bird feeding. Furthermore, the availability of plants for the production of these repellents was examined. Toxic effects were not observed. Repelling substances are identified but there were further needs for product placement and market development. Thus, three goals should be pursued by experimental developments in this project. First a further practice oriented route of administration for repellents in terms of toxic baits additives need to be opened up and second the effectiveness of repellents with conventional seed treatment at crow infestation should be statistically validated. In the third place, in addition to the development of the formulation of the repellents, the persistence of seed treatment should be improved to protect interspecific against bird damage. At the end of the project products should be available to reliably deter birds in the field and production in participating companies in pilot-plant scale for seed treatment should be possible. Basic data should be available for the application of repellents as a toxic bait application that will determine further procedure.
