Polyomaviruses in beef
Project
Project code: BfR-BIOS-08-1322-617
Contract period: 01.04.2015
- 31.12.2015
Purpose of research: Applied research
During the last years, a connection between the consumption of beef meat and the occurrence of intestinal cancer has been discussed. The presence of tumor viruses in beef meat, which can contribute to cancer development, has been suggested as a hypothetic cause. In 2014, several polyomaviruses have been detected for the first time in beef meat samples from the USA. In the project, PCR methods for the detection of the bovine polyomaviruses 1 to 3 (BPyV1-3) were developed. Thereafter, 102 beef meat samples from Germany were analyzed using the developed methods. BPyV-1 was detected in only one of the samples, whereas BPyV2 and BPyV3 were not detected. The results indicate a low prevalence of bovine polyomaviruses in beef meat from Germany. Further studies involving larger sample sizes and processed beef meat are necessary to increase the significance of this estimation.
