Meloidogyne chitwoodi is an import pathogen of potato. The first nematode generation generally multiplies on potato roots while the second and third generation can also multiply on potato tubers. Tuber infection is usually associated with formation of galls that appear as pimple-like ridges on the tuber. Such potato tubers cannot be marketed and mean a 100% loss for the farmer. Field observations indicated that some potato genotypes only allow nematode multiplication on roots but not on tubers. Under those conditions, tubers show no symptoms and are marketable. The current reseach project studies the interaction of Meloidoygne chitwoodi on various potato genotypes focusing on nematode multiplication exclusively on roots versus nematode multiplication on roots and tubers.
