Project code: JKI-A-08-1221
Contract period: 01.07.2015 - 30.06.2017
Purpose of research: Applied research

Cyst nematodes are major pests of cereals worldwide. In Germany, the two cereal cyst nematode species Heterodera avenae and H. filipjevi occur. In recent years, the wide distribution of H. filipjevi in Germany was detected. Populations of H. filipjevi were until a few years ago assigned to the species H. avenae. The two species differ markedly in their virulence. This requires new approaches of pest control in cereals. Globally the importance of the cereal cyst nematodes has increased. In Scandinavia and especially in the Mediterranean region, damaging effects have been reported. International research programs are carried out – among ohters - in Turkey, China and Australia. A CIMMYT research program focuses on the resistance of cereals to these pathogens. The JKI has long experience in the field of resistance testing and evaluation of crops against plant parasitic nematodes. For cereal cyst nematodes different test protocols have been described. Research is needed to select appropriate nematode populations, determine optimal test conditions and on the reproducibility of results. The aim of this research project is to develop and describe test methods for the preliminary examination and the official resistance testing protocol. In addition to the development of official resistance testing protocols for Germany this research also aims at contributing to international research projects on cereal cyst nematodes.
