Climate change

Project code: keine Angabe
Contract period: 01.01.2014 - 31.12.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research

It is getting warmer; carbon dioxide amounts in the atmosphere are increasing – also in Hessen. Exactly how do global warming and increased concentrations of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide affect plants, soils, microorganisms, and insects? What does climate change mean for Central European agriculture? In order to investigate the complex mechanisms working in carbon dioxide, the LOEWE Focus Group 'FACE2FACE' combines two large open-air experimentation facilities into one research platform: the Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) systems of Justus Liebig University Giessen and the College of Geisenheim. FACE systems enable carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature on defined surfaces to be regulated and thereby simulate various conditions such as those expected to occur by 2050. With this, researchers focus on the agricultural ecosystems of grassland, vineyard, and horticulture. From their findings, they seek to develop strategies to adapt to climate change or to mitigate its impact.
