Project code: BfR-BIOS-08-1322-582
Contract period: 01.03.2014 - 31.12.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research

Toxoplasmosis is one of the most common parasitic infections world wide. Humans become infected by accidentally ingesting oocysts from the environment or by ingesting tissue cysts from undercooked meat. In immunocompetent persons a T. gondii infection usually does not result in clinical symptoms. During pregnancy the parasite can be transmitted to the foetus, which can lead to miscarriage or congenital toxoplasmosis. The role of cured products as a possible origin of infection in humans is currently not well defined. Therefore, the effect of curing on the viability of tissue cysts will be examined during this project.
