Project code: JKI-EP-08-2115
Contract period: 01.11.2007 - 31.10.2010
Purpose of research: Basic research

Downy mildew of peas has developed into an economically relevant risk factor for the production of peas in Europe in the last years. The differentation of this obligate-biotrophic fungus in races poses a great challenge for breeding. Eight races are described in older publications but it is assumed that more races are existing. Newer investigations of the current European race spectrum don’t exist, as far as we know. There are differences in the susceptibility between cultivars to the pathogen. Several cultivars are even presumed to be resistant but a detailled knowledge of the race specifical interaction is missing in these cases. It has been alarming that also several cultivars classified to be resistant were attacked in some European areas under cultivation. Therefore, new resistant cultivars have to be developed in consideration of the current races. Precondition for this is to analyse the current European race spectrum using modern molecularbiological methods (RAPD-PCR, AFLP or isoenzyme analysis). The aim of the sub-project is to develop the scientifical and methodical basis for breeding of cultivars with resistance to defined race and thus to improve the efficiency of the breeding process.
