Project code: JKI-ZR-08-5193
Contract period: 01.01.2015 - 31.12.2018
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: grapevine breeding, resistance, quality, wine grape varieties

Grapevine breeding for wine grapes around the world is largely focusing on resistances to major diseases (e.g. powdery and downy mildew). Combination of resistance loci (stacking of resistances) is the current approach to contribute to durability at the best one can achieve today. The great success in resistance breeding which was achieved during the last decade is primarily based on the identification and application of genetic markers for distinguishing and monitoring resistance loci throughout breeding steps. In particular early diagnosis permitted to focus on those plantlets which carry desired combinations of resistance. States of the art are breeding lines with at least 2 or 3 resistance loci for powdery and downy mildew. These resistances need to be combined with good viticultural performance (e.g. growth habit, timing of flowering, veraison, ripening, and good yield) and high wine quality (e.g. no off-flavors, good sugar and acid content, flavor profile, and content of minerals like potassium) making grapevine breeding a real challenging task. Wine quality depends on plenty of metabolic compounds and is heavily influenced by environmental factors, being thus the most complex trait which is most time consuming to verify. Usually selection of varieties for their wine quality requires about 20 years. The major drawback in speeding up quality selection is the lack of markers for single parameters defining this important trait. The project will address this question and intends to develop genetic markers for major parameters with relevance to the quality trait as indicated below.
