Project code: BfR-LMS-08-1322-589
Contract period: 01.03.2014 - 31.12.2015
Purpose of research: Applied research

The man-made chemical perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was recently included into the candidate list of REACH. It is assumed that this may lead to a restriction for the use of the compound in the near future. As a result, industry is currently switching to the use of perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) for the production of perfluorinated surface coatings, because PFHxA seems to be less toxic than PFOA. On the molecular level, however, almost nothing is known about potential modes of action of PFHxA so far. Hence, aim of the project is to characterize the molecular effects of PFHxA in human liver cells in order to generate experimental data relevant for humans for the prospective risk characterization of PFHxA.
