Food and consumer protection

Project code: MRI-PBE-08-08
Contract period: 01.01.2001 - 31.12.2028
Purpose of research: Basic research

Based on epidemiological studies, a high consumption of fruits and vegetables, accompanying uptake of phytochemicals (e.g. carotenoids, flavonoids), is related with a diminished risk for several disease. Molecular mechanisms of the effect of phytochemicals on the development of disease are not clearly assessed. Therefore, the effects of nutrients such as carotenoids and flavonoids on the following processes are addressed: induction of DNA strand breaks, formation of 8-oxoganine, apoptosis/necrosis, cell proliferation, intrazellular signaling, alteration of expression of associated proteins and gut permeability. Furthermore, the bioavailability of these nutrients is determined by use of appropriate cell systems (e.g. Caco-2/Transwell system).
