Purpose of research: Applied research

To determine the residues of the group of presumptive Bacillus cereus species tomato and sweet pepper vegetables will be treated with the Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) Product XenTari. After different time intervals vegetables will be harvested and kept frozen until analysis. Frozen vegetables will be sent to the JKI, Institute for Biological Control. The number of colony forming units of the presumptive Bacillus cereus species will be enumerated following the protocol of the „Amtlichen Sammlung von Untersuchungsverfahren nach § 64 LFGB Untersuchung von Lebensmitteln Horizontales Verfahren zur Zählung von präsumtivem Bacillus cereus Koloniezählverfahren bei 30°C“. Information on B.t.- residues on tomatoes and sweet pepper cultivated in greenhouses is limited. First experiments on tomatoes were set up in cooperation with the Chamber of Agriculture Nord Rhine-Westphalia, Plant Protection Service in 2013 (Stephan et al., JOURNAL FÜR KULTURPFLANZEN, 66 (9). p. 312–318, 2014) and on sweet pepper within a master thesis in 2015. These experiments were not repeated. In addition to a R&D-project (supported by the AK-Lück) data on residues of presumptive Bacillus cereus species on tomato and sweet pepper will be analyzed. The aim was to investigate residues of the product XenTari® as colony forming units (CFU) per gram freshweight on sweet pepper and tomato. In both cases the cultures were grown in the greenhouse. Specific attention was set on the guide value of 100.000 CFU/g freshweight. On all samples residues could be found. For bell pepper the values reached the guide value. Untreated controls showed lesser amounts of CFU.
