Host status of green manure crops for root lesion nematodes

Project

Project code: JKI-EP-08-2300
Contract period: 01.05.2014 - 31.12.2017
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: plant protection, morphological and molecular characterization, Pratylenchus penetrans

The root lesion nematode Pratylenchus penetrans is one of the economically most important plant-parasitic nematodes in temperate regions. It causes damage to annual and perennial crops, especially of vegetables, potatoes, maize, soybeans and strawberries. Nematicides to combat this nematode are not registered in Germany. An alternative control option is the use of catch crops that are non hosts for P. penetrans. So far, our knowledge regarding the host status of catch crops for P. penetrans is still limited. Also it is not known whether populations of P. penetrans from different regions vary in terms of their host suitability and damage potential. Thus, for the development of sustainable control methods it is important to understand the variability between and within the populations of P. penetrans. Therefore, the objectives of the present research project are: (1) characterization of the host suitability of different cover crops for P. penetrans, (2) detection of the multiplication rate and damage potential of different populations of P. penetrans on selected cover crops, and (3) morphological and molecular differentiation of different populations of P. pentrans. The above findings are directly incorporated into practice and will help to improve the diagnosis and control of P. penetrans.
