Collaborative project: Finalizing of the GPS-GSM tracking system with software applications for cattle on mountain pastures - subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2813IP013, 5829
Contract period: 26.08.2016 - 25.05.2018
Budget: 139,936 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Tracking systems for animals have been mainly used for research purposes so far. However, mass market production of GPS receivers and new accumulators enable the use of such technology for extensive and free-ranged alpine pastures with high biodiversity for the advantage of the animals and the farmers. On alpine farms the daily control or searching for animals account for about 70 % of the total daily workload. Even nowadays this work is done by the herdsmen afoot and qualified staff is hard to find. This leaves a large potential for the optimization of work efficiency and work time reduction. Within the framework of innovation research funding from the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture a prototype of a GPS-GSM tracking system was developed and successfully tested, aiming to facilitate and improve the pasture management. The aim of the current project application 'GPS-Pasture-2” is the finalization of the tracking system and a market launch at the beginning of the 2018 pasture season. The tracking system with its special software applications should automatically record the position of the animal, support the herdsman by searching the animal or offer possibilities to optimize the pasture management. This should contribute to a better planning of the daily schedule and make work easier for the farmer and herdsman. For successful finalization and market launch of the tracking system the further development processes are necessary: (1) Optimization of accumulator life – utilization of new available accumulators on the market and inductive energy transmission; (2) Software optimization – implementation of new PC/Smartphone and Portal software; (3) Optimization of housing system – size reduction and improvement of its form as well as robustness; (4) Implementation of decision support tools for farmers – geo-fencing and heat map functions.
