Collaborative project: Tools for quality improvement in breeding and propagating garlic comprising cultivation as well as virus diagnostics - subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2818209015
Contract period: 01.09.2016 - 31.08.2019
Budget: 103,171 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

"The interest in organic and regional grown garlic is rising. During the project, garlic of distinct origin and various genetic backgrounds was tested. All cultivars/types, independent if they were bought from external sources or multiplied from own sources, were tested virus positive. Mostly mixed infections comprising poty-, allexi and carlaviruses occurred. In general the pattern of virus infections did not change during the 3 year period however the yield and quality of produced garlic bulbs differed significantly. Other parameters such as cultivar/type, availability of nutrients, fungal infections, animal pests (e. g. aphids, mites), temperature and water supply affected the yield and quality more prominently. Established, regional garlic cultivars/types showed high yield and quality stability and are recommended for further use.Neem Azal application showed only weak effects on pathogens and virus vectors respectively. Warm water treatments can be used to control eriophyoid mites."
