INTERREG IV B - Programme of transnational cooperation in Europe (INTERREG IV B)

Funding programme

Contract period: 2014 - 2020
Project management agency: European Commission
Funding institution: European Commission
Structural goals: European Integration

Since 1997, the European Union has been supporting cooperation between the cities and regions of its member states in the field of regional development. The - Interreg B - transnational cooperation programmes promote transnational interdepartmental cooperation. Currently, 14 programme areas or programmes exist in which various projects are carried out. Germany is involved in six of these programmes: the Alpine Space, the Danube Region, Central Europe, the North Sea Region, North-West Europe and the Baltic Sea Region.

Interreg B is geared towards the Europe 2020 Strategy and promotes territorial integration, i.e. the growing together of regions. The programmes concentrate on topics supporting growth and linking economic, environmental and social aspects against the background of the individual challenges of each programme area.

Transnational cooperation happens in the context of projects bringing together decision-makers of local authorities, associations, enterprises or universities. Interreg offers them the opportunity to develop ideas and to test new working methods: The project participants jointly develop strategies and solutions for their related overall topic and put them locally into practice in the context of pilot projects. In doing so, they benefit from the international exchange and the experience of their project partners. In this way, developments and investments can be initiated from which municipalities and regions might profit beyond the duration of a project.
