Accompanying research on the National Future Plan of Organic Farming

Project

Project code: TI-OL-08-PID1705
Contract period: 01.07.2015 - 30.04.2017
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

Numerous support measures have been designed to help more farms convert to organic farming. But the number of converting farms has been declining for years. In addition to a positive development in consumer demand, organic farms in Germany benefit from a wide range of national and regional policy measures. Despite these favorable conditions, consistently fewer farms are converting to organic farming. In the year 2014 growth was only 0.3 percent. What needs to change to increase the number of organically farmed land area as politically desired in Germany? The BMEL-initiated National Future Plan of Organic Farming seeks to address this question. In the framework of an accompanying research project, we study the framework conditions, requirements and connecting factors for a coherent organic support policy in Germany and create an overview of the current support of organic farming in Germany and Europe. The project is divided into four contextual work modules: (a) survey of the design of relevant organic support programs in Germany, (b) analysis of the regional development, support strategies and coherency of the support policy, (c) analysis of the development and support of organic agriculture from a farm perspective and (d) survey and analysis of the support for organic agriculture in the EU.
