Development of an ELISA and lateral flow devices for genotype specific identification of the causative agent of American Foulbrood and identification of the causative agent of European Foulbrood of honey bees (Floweric)

Project

Project code: 031B0529A
Contract period: 01.04.2018 - 30.09.2020
Budget: 166,376 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are the most ecologically and economically valuable agricultural pollinators. Foulbrood diseases are among the economically most important brood diseases of honey bees worldwide. The aim of the project is the development of a diagnostic kit for on-site analysis, which allows distinguishing between different pathogen types of American Foulbrood (AFB) and European Foulbrood (EFB). A simple and reliable on-site diagnosis would help to make rapid decisions in the field, which could reduce the spread of both honey bee brood diseases and the associated ecological damage to an extent that current diagnostic methods cannot. For this purpose, specific antigens of the different pathogen types will be identified and subsequently antibodies against them will be generated. These will be used for to develop a multiparametric on-site analysis kit. The kit will be based on lateral flow immunoassay technology, which enables a cost-effective, safe and very easy to handle application in the field.
