Development of nitrification inhibiting and climate resilient cropping systems with fodder legumes
Project
Project code: 2818EPS016
Contract period: 18.07.2019
- 31.12.2022
Budget: 290,396 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: crop production, clover, sustainability, water (water protection, water supply system)
The objective of the project is to develop, by integrating ribwort plantain into forage legumes, which is new for Germany and which (a) results in lower losses of nitrate nitrogen due to nitrification inhibiting effects of ribwort plantain under and in particular after plowing of forage legume crops; and b) at the same time, in dry periods, a higher yield of cuttings is achieved compared to a corresponding amount of forage legumes with grasses due to the deep-rooting capacity of ribwort plantain. To this end, mixtures of red clover with italian ryegrass and red clover with ribwort plantain will first be investigated at two locations with regard to yield of cuttings and symbiotic N2 fixation as well as the development of ammonium and nitrate reserves in the soil and the quality of the fodder produced with pronounced dry phases in the vegetation period of the stands. Subsequently, these stands will be incorporated into the soil by plowing, the release of plant-available amounts of ammonium and nitrate in the soil will be determined in laboratory incubation experiments and in the field. Winter wheat will be cultivated in the field after the forage legume mixtures and its yield formation and nitrogen uptake investigated. The overriding aim of the investigations is to develop a new cultivation system of forager legumes with ribwort plantain as a mixing partner, using red clover as an example, which exhibits higher resilience to dry phases and a significantly lower risk of loss of nitrate nitrogen through leaching.
