Dual-purpose chickens in organic farming - breeding and potential identification of suitable origins and implementation in practice. Eberswalde (Öko2Huhn)
Project
Project code: 2819OE086
Contract period: 20.02.2020
- 31.12.2022
Budget: 605,970 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal breeding, meat, eggs, animal genetic resources, animal welfare, husbandry techniques, organic farming, poultry
The overall objective of the project is to further develop the dual-use approach of chickens in organic farming. The problems of one-sided conventional basic breeding remain. In order to do the best possible justice to the various producer structures and demands of the industry, approaches in the field of organic crossbreeding and breeding of pedigree chickens are to be pursued in this project. Always in focus: a possible dual use. On organic farms, performance data are collected for female animals (laying performance) and male animals (fattening and slaughtering performance), as well as animal welfare indicators that are particularly important for organic farming. For this purpose, a wide range of different origins that can be used as dual-purpose chickens are used to illustrate the entire range in the field. In addition to the performance data, further economic indicators are collected on selected farms in order to be able to represent the costs (expenses) and benefits (income) of dual-purpose chickens. From this, calculations for model farms are derived. Economic efficiency is essential in order to give farmers a realistic picture about the consequences of the use of dual-purpose chickens and thus to increase their acceptance.
