Laufzeit: 01.01.2008 - 31.12.2010
Forschungszweck: Grundlagenforschung

Considerable amounts of organic matter are stabilized in paddy soils, and thus a large proportion of the terrestrial carbon is conserved in wetland rice soils. Nonetheless the mechanisms for stabilization of organic carbon in paddy soils as driven by redox cycling are largely unknown. The aim of project P2 is to identify the role of aggregation, organo-mineral complexes, charred OM and phytoliths for the stabilization of organic carbon in paddy soils in a chronosequence of paddy soil use and thus duration of management-induced paddy soil formation. A method consisting of a combination of physical (particle-size and density) and chemical fractionation methods has to be adapted to the paddy soils to isolate specific aggregates and organo-mineral complexes. The isolated fractions will then be analyzed for the chemical composition of the organic matter by solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy and for their radiocarbon age by P6. The mineral phase will be characterized by X-ray diffraction, selective or total removal of minerals, and analysis of specific surface area. This will enable us to understand the influence of duration of paddy soil use, aggregation, particle fraction, element ratio in organic matter, type and content of iron oxides, and phytoliths on soil organic carbon stabilization in paddy soils and to evaluate the contribution of the different stabilization processes to organic matter formation in paddy soils.
