Entomological studies to control Bluetongue disease (BTD), WG 1 (Project)
...In August 2006 BTD was introduced from Belgium and / or the Netherlands to Western Germany from where it spread within 1 year to most other regions of Germany. The Friedrich-Löffler-Institute (FLI) recognized that the virus belonged to the serotype 8, one of other 20 occurring in South Africa. ...The UV-traps were activated during the nights of the 1rst until 8th day of every month and resulted in the catch of large amounts of ethanol preserved insects. ...In 2008 no positive pool was detected in the catches of January until Mai. 4. Clinical symptoms in infected ruminants occurred mostly 1.5-2 months earlier than viruspositive midges in the test. ...

Biodiversity of microorgansisms in forest soils: Pilot study for an additional investigation to the 2nd Soil Survey (Project)
...Chemical and physical parameters of soil samples and forest characteristics were assessed in an area-wide grid in the 2nd Soil Survey in Germany. The biodiversity of microorganisms in forest soils will be characterised as an accompanying investigation. ...In these techniques, the 16S-rDNA of Bacteria and Archaea and the ITS1-5.8S-Its2 region of fungi are especially suitable for a taxonomic evaluation. In a first pilot study the reproducible extraction of DNA from forest soil samples with a high content of humic acids will be optimised and the T-RFLP technique (Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) will be established....

Genomics-based exploitation of wheat genetic resources for plant breeding (Project)
...The overall goal of GeneBank2.0 is to leverage the wheat ex-situ collection hosted at the IPK Gatersleben to an actively deployed one in plant breeding by applying an integrated concept encompassing cutting-edge genomics, phenomics, biodiversity informatics, and precision (pre)breeding. The goal is to characterize the winter wheat ex-situ collection (ca. 9,700 accessions) of the IPK Gatersleben to identify novel resistances which are not present in wheat elite cultivars. ...

SYNBREED R3: Genetic and phenotypic characterization of a highly informative sample of German Simmental cattle (Project)
...Genotyping will be conducted within the genotyping platform T2 and all genotypes will be combined with existing phenotypes. ...Data generated within this project are delivered and stored in a central data base, and accessible to associated partners within the network (e.g. A2, A3, and A4). The results of this project will be checked and evaluated with respect to using molecular genetic information for various aspects in practical breeding programs. New innovative approaches will be integrated in existing cattle breeding programs and will help to increase the efficiency of future cattle breeding programs. Sub-projects: R3.1: Structured high-resolution association studies in cattle R3.2: Genotyping and bioinformatic analysis of candidate genes R3.3: Genome-based breeding strategies in cattle...

Improved contribution of local feed to support 100% organic feed supply to pigs and poultry (Project)
...Therefore, 6 one-phase feeding strategies - 3 types of concentrate diets of various 100% organic feed composition (high, medium, and low external input type) combined with 2 roughages (grass-clover-silage or straw as organically obligatory roughage source) - are tested for piglets’ performance, health status, losses, and economy at the Thuenen-Institute of Organic Farming, Trenthorst, Germany. 24 litters per feeding strategy (1.509 piglets) are examined from day 14 – 63 post natum with a 7 week suckling period. ...Daily weight gain during the 49 day test period is at the same level for the commercial and for the Trenthorst own piglet diet (357g) and only 4% higher than compared to the lactating diet. Medical treatments (4.4% of the piglets) and losses (2.5% of the piglets) are at a low level and independent from the 6 feeding strategies. ...

Collaborative project: Standardization of the GeoBox infrastructure - Phase 1: Dezentralized data management and regional networking - subproject 4 (Project)
...The goal of the project GeoBox-I is the experimental development, testing and dissemination of a practicable prototype of a standardized and resilient GeoBox infrastructure for decentralized data storage and regional networking. This includes (1) providing data structures and vocabularies for exchange-relevant information which are easy to understand in a suitable web portal as a public service to the industry; (2) the GeoBox specification as a corporate data hub with a cache for a variety of relevant information, under the sole control of the particular farm; (3) the provision of key geospatial and technical data for farms with decentralized storage in farms; (4) the realization of communication protocols and form assistants for standardized data exchange with third parties; (5) the design of exemplary services that extract directly useful advice to farmers from the standardized data available; and (6) the implementation of all essential functions in the form of disclosed reference implementations of exemplary applications. These are focused on sovereign information and advice in the field of crop protection and transferred to the practice in the context of education and training on the topic of resilient smart farming. The 5 packages of the work plan include 1) design and specification of the system concept and the overall architecture, 2) the realization of the infrastructure level with GeoBox server with dynamic vocabulary services (including provision of vocabulary and appropriate change management), 3) the reference implementation of a 'HofBox' as decentralized knowledge store and node for internal and external data communication (operational level of resilient communication capability), 4) the realization of exemplary apps for communication, service and consulting assistance to agricultural applications in the field (examples of service level), finally 5) the support of roll-out and practical introduction by training and further education, training courses, cooperations with model companies, comparison with other federal states and establishment of a project-accompanying advisory board from associations, industry and users. ...The ZEPP is in work package 4 responsible for: T4500 Easily available decision support for the implementation of integrated pest management with prioritization of non-chemical measures T4600 Decision support for resistance management...

Improvement of next-generation sequencing methods for the detection of zoonotic pathogens (Project)
...A key outcome has been the development of comprehensive probe panels for the targeted enrichment of viral pathogen nucleic acids ("VirBaits" and "VirBaits 2.0 One Health"), which can be used when the untargeted metagenomic approach does not allow sufficient pathogen characterisation and increased sensitivity is required. ...The work on a protocol for nucleic acid extraction from very fatty materials (e.g. brain, food samples), which is now available, should also be emphasised. ...All work packages provided support services for the genetic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 and thus contributed to the nationwide monitoring, research and provision of SARS-CoV-2 genomes....
