Development of a molecular diagnostic for sustainable and resource-efficient production of the renewable resource potato starch. Subproject 3 (Project)
...The following results have been achieved in the reporting period: WP1 Development of molecular markers for resistance to pathotypes 1,2,6,18: Extensive resistance tests were performed for the following groups of material: a) Potato varieties with known resistance spectrum: The inoculum for the tests of 47 varieties with multiple resistance, 50 varieties with P1 resistance, 50 varieties with P1 susceptibility and 80 wild species with unknown resistance or susceptibility to potato wart disease was increased for all four pathotypes (in total 15,900 warts). b) Segregating populations: 24 genotypes were infected with pathotype 1 and 18 genotypes with P18, seedling tissue was taken after 2, 7, 14 and 21 days and frozen, then shipped to partner LUH. c) Crossing populations with other donors of resistance: The parents of each crossing populations were tested with all four pathotypes (588 tubers). 150 genotypes of the population Panda x L04 were tested with 20 tubers on pathotype 18 and the distribution of the means was calculated. WP 3+4: Identification of candidate genes by proteom analysis of the infection course and mechanism of infestation course: JKI (AG Flath) has provided the partner LUH with P18 infected tuber material at regular intervals....

Novel and improved tools for monitoring and tackling genetic selection in populations of the potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida (Project)
...In the last years new populations of G. pallida have emerged due to the intensive usage of plant resistance, that are able to overcome plant resistance. ...The main goals of this project are as follows: 1. Identifying the center of origin of resistance breaking PCN populations found in Germany and the Netherlands.2. Developing rapid and reliable methodologies and tools for monitoring spread of virulence in G. pallida in the EU. A standard resistance test for PCN is intended to be used in official schemes for testing new potato varieties for resistance to PCN.3. ...

Collaborative project: Investigations on specific feeding and housing concepts for fattening boars in order to reduce boar taint due to androstenone and skatole levels in the carcass - BoarTaintDown -subproject 1 (Project)
...In agreement to the most recent publications estimators of heritability of skatole and androstenone are high, 0.51 and 0.49, respectively. It is of great importance to conduct such trials using well genetically defined animals....

Method development for the identification of biomarkers for risk assessment of endocrine disruptors and phthalates (Project)
...Phthalates are used as stabilizers in all sorts of consumer goods (e.g. PVC). Dibutylphthalat (DBP), diethylhexylphthalat (DEHP), diisononylphthalat (DINP), diisodecylphthalat (DIDP), butylbenzylphthalat (BBP) und di-n-octylphthalat (DNOP) are used as stabilizers in plastics. ...Especially the developing child may be affected by substances with known effects on the endocrine system.EU guideline 2005/84/EG was introduced to reduce the exposure of children to endocrine disruptors and the contents of three phthalates were reduced to less than 0.1% (w/w) in toys and baby goods. DINP, DIDP and DNOP were banned from products, which could get into oral contact with babies. The term endocrine disruptor was introduced by Colborn et al. in 1993. ...

Plastic litter and marine fish (Project)
...Macro plastic items and especially small plastic particles (< 5mm) known as microplastic have been in the focus of the project. The results lead to the conclusion that the relatively small amounts of microplastic taken up by fishes in North Sea and Baltic Sea (0 to 10 particles per fish) are not likely to be a threat for fish health or for the consumer. ...
