Chemical analytical assessment of lethal damages of honey bees possibly caused by plant protection products or other xenobiotica (Project)
...Official (sovereign) duty in accordance with § 33 (2), point 8 Plant Protection Act. Development and establishment of methods for the residue analysis of the active substances of plant protection products in very different matrices (bees, plants, pollen, wax). The methods must be constantly optimized and validated (e.g. after admission of new active substances in the investigation program). ...

BioEcoSIM - An innovative bio-economy solution to valorise livestock manure into a range of stabilised soil improving materials for environmental sustainability and economic benefit for European agriculture (Collaborative project)
...BioEcoSIM will valorise livestock manure as an important example of valuable bio-waste into 1) pathogen-free, P-rich organic soil amendment (P-rich biochar), 2) slow releasing mineral fertilisers and 3) reclaimed water. By doing this, we will i) reduce negative environmental impacts (eutrophication of water bodies, and NH3 and N2O emissions) in intensive livestock regions, ii) help to decrease NH3 produced by the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process, (iii) mitigate EU’s dependency on the depleting mineral sources for P-fertilisers, (iv) increase water efficiency use in agriculture and (v) support European Strategies and Directives, while generating economic benefits in the agriculture and bio-economy sector. The project will combine three innovative technologies 1) superheated steam drying and non-catalytic pyrolysis to convert carbon in manure into P-rich biochar and syngas, 2) electrolytic precipitation of struvite and calcium phosphate and 3) selective separation and recovery of NH3 by gas-permeable membrane. ...

SFB 670 TP AP1: Synthetic Nucleoside Analogs for the Activation of NOD Proteins (Project)
...Within this project, synthetic organic chemistry will be used to generate libraries of small molecules, i.e. lipophilic carbocyclic nucleoside analogs. These compounds will then be used in the laboratories of partners within SFB 670 (M. ...As initial experiments have already shown, some carbocyclic nucleoside analogs have the ability to inhibit the TNF induced activation of NF-kB in a NOD1- or NOD2- dependent manner. By investigation (screening) of various synthetic nucleoside analogs (as NOD agonists or antagonists, respectively), the potential of this class of compounds will be further evaluated and structure-activity relationships will be identified - as a precondition for structural optimization. ...

North Sea Observation and Assessment (NOAH) (Project)
...This central product will be generated by: 1) analysing and processing existing sedimentological, geochemical, biological and human impact data to derive statistically distinct sediment provinces. Within these provinces, we identify homogeneous and representative areas for field work, where 2) new data on temporal and spatial variability will be raised during field campaigns in order to better constrain characteristic physical, sedimentological, chemical and biological properties. ...The habitat atlas and related properties will be publicised in the form of an interactive webGIS and will be transferred to an appropriate institutional home for future augmentation, maintenance, and publication at the end of the project (e.g., MDI-DE)....

RETHINK - RURAGRI: Rethinking the links between farm modernisation, rural development and resilience in a world of increasing demands and finite resources (Project)
...More specifically, the objectives of the project are to: 1. Use a set of 14 case studies, i.e. real-life examples, to explore the connections between farm modernisation, rural development and resilience and indicate how we can shape them in positive ways (see the brief profiles of case studies here). 2. ...

Deciphering the function and evolution of the iconic heterostyly supergene in primroses (Project)
...The two forms are determined by the S-locus as a complex supergene, i.e. a chromosomal region containing at least five individual genes that control the different traits, such as anther length, and are held together by very tight linkage due to suppressed recombination. ...Therefore, this project will use a timely combination of next-generation sequencing and forward genetics to (1) determine the function of the additional S-locus genes; (2) test specific hypotheses about their mode of action; (3) retrace the chromosomal evolution of the S-locus; and (4) initiate a comparative study of heterostyly in other groups. ...

BonaRes (ModulA, Phase 2): ORDIAmur - Overcoming Replant Disease by an Integrated Approach - subproject DA (Project)
...Replant disease is of special importance for members of the Rosaceae family, but has also been reported for some other crops, e.g. vine. The replant diseased soils can not be used for up to 20-30 years, unless soil disinfection is applied. The used substances are ecologically harmful, and the development of other approaches is absolutely essential to maintain a sustained soil productivity. Expected results 1. Prediction of presence or absence of soil decline by bio-tests, plant and soil indicators. 2. ...
