Expression analysis of drug-metabolizing enzymes in human keratinocytes after treatment with selected xenobiotics (Project)
...CYP1A1, CYP1B1 (Luch, 2004). It indicates that tissue-specific differences may apply in respect to enzyme expression levels and activities. We have further demonstrated a strong induction of CYP1A1 and 1B1 protein levels by western blot. Experiments to determine the enzymatic activities of selected CYPs (CYP1A1, 1A2, 2A6, 3A4, 1B1, 2B6, 2C9, 2C8, 2D6, 2E1) are scheduled for the next funding period. Further studies on CYP functions will be focused on CYP1A1 and 1B1. Firstly, we will investigate whether exogenous factors or cytokines affect both CYP expression and activities in human keratinocytes. ...

Dissection of Wild Emmer Wheat QTLs (Quantitative Trait Loci) Conferring Drought Resistance (Project)
...The aim of this project is to saturate these with molecular markers and to transfer the shortest QTL carrying fragments into adapted wheat genotypes to improve drought stress tolerance. F4 progenies that were prcviously sown in December 2016, were grown under water-limited and well-watered conditions for phenotyping in 2017. The QTLs on chromosome 2BS and 7AS were both narrowed down to a genetic intervals of 3-4 cM correspondning to 13.6 Mio and 1.1 Mio basepairs. They harbor about 156 and 43 genes, respectively. Segmental RILs showing recombination events within these regions are currently subjected to genotyping by sequencing (GBS) to identify additional recombination events to further narrow down the QTL-fragments. ...

Development of a national evaluation program of plant genetic resources of cereal crops (Project)
...The sets consisted of 27.6 % foreign varieties, 23.1 % genebank mateial, 18.3 % material from BAZ, 9.2 % material from breeders, 17.3 % standards and 4.4 % differential sortiment for pathogens. These sets were evaluated at 41 locations., winter wheat at 27, spring wheat at 7, winter barley at 20 and spring barley at 18 locations. In the frame of this project altogether 15 diseases and 2 no parasite related symptoms were scored, i.e. 10 on winter wheat, 8 in winter barley, 9 in spring barley and 7 in spring wheat. ...

Development of a nursery-infested flying brand management for the breeding of resistant spring barley under natural infestation conditions (Project)
...Rostr.) was observed during three vegetation periods in a breeding area under organic farming with segregating generations of spring barley up to F9 including lines with resistant parents and extended with susceptible varieties and genetic resources. ...Selected lines without infection were inoculated with a loose smut suspension into the flowers of single ears starting in F5. From F5 to F7 most of the susceptible lines were identified by natural infection. ...For this reason it was suggested only to use seed stripes for disease spreading during three generations from F4 to F6 and artificial inoculation only for a check of resistance in F7 and for new accessions to test. ...

Elucidation of virulence determinants of highly pathogenic non-H5, non-H7 avian influenza viruses (Project)
...The potential of H4N2 to shift to an HP phenotype will be investigated (1) after serial passages in embryonated chicken eggs or chickens, (2) by increasing the number of multiple basic amino acids at the HA CS, and (3) by reassortment with HPAI H5/H7 viruses. ...Reassortment with HPAIV H5N1, but not HPAIV H7N7, increased virulence of H4N2 virus. This indicates that evolution of HPAIV H4N2 requires specific constellation of gene segments similar to those of H5N1, which may also explain why HPAIV H4N2 were not isolated until now. ...
