PEACHES: Examination in adolescence (PEACHES Teenager) (Project)
...The overall objectives are the longitudinal investigation of (1) the development of unfavourable dietary patterns and nutrition-related diseases and of (2) potentially positive or negative effects of a (longer-term) vegetarian/vegan diet in children (compared to omnivorous control group) up to adolescence. Using the existing child dataset from birth to primary school age, in combination with a follow-up study of PEACHES children in adolescence, the following specific objectives will be addressed: - Assessment of food consumption to determine nutrient intake and comparison with food-based dietary guidelines and nutrient reference values - Anthropometric measurements and longitudinal analysis of BMI development - Measurement and analysis of cardiometabolic parameters in blood, including lipid/glucose metabolism and blood pressure Supplementary objectives for a subgroup of the follow-up in adolescence: - Measurement of biomarkers (especially critical nutrients) in blood and urine - Measurement of bone mineralisation (bone density) - Testing of cognitive development (intelligence/attention testing) In addition, the resulting data can be used to address the following additional objectives for the development of large, planned child nutrition strategies: - Piloting of innovative digital food consumption assessment methods to be developed or modified for the national nutrition monitoring in children - Analysing the development of longitudinally assessed dietary patterns in children depending on factors such as age, BMI, SES (e.g. for inclusion in target group-specific food-based dietary guidelines) - Analysis of factors (including nutrition in the first 1,000 days) that contribute to the development of nutrition-related diseases and preliminary stages in childhood and adolescence as well as development of prediction models for preventive measures in (pediatric) practice...

Investigation on the in vitro metabolism of natural contaminants using fish liver microsomes (Project)
...The use of so-called microsomes (i.e. metabolically active tissue homogenates) for the initial investigation of the metabolism of foreign substances in the body of mammals is a well-established model. ...The dominant microsomal metabolic pathways are oxidative phase 1 transformations catalyzed by cytochrome P450 monooxygenases and phase 2 metabolism catalyzed by various transferases. ...The focus will be on oxidative phase 1 metabolism....

PRotein and biOmolecules sources for nutritional security and biodiVersity of bakery products in a cIrcular fooD system (Project)
...With the aim to promote circularity in the agrifood systems, 4 specific objectives have been identified: (1) identify by-products rich in nutrients and bioactives, (2) valorise by-products, (3) promote circular Food Systems, (4) define strategies to put the new products into the market. After having mapped sources of proteins and bioactive compounds from agrifood processes by-products, the most important and suitable by-products from different food production chains (e.g.: dairy, oilseeds, brewery, meat, prickly pear cactus) will be valorised treating them with innovative 'clean technologies' in pilot facilities to extract bioactive compounds (e.g. oils, waxes, fatty acids, carotenoids, polyphenols, tocopherols, bioactive peptides) and obtain defatted protein cakes to be used for producing new bakery products. ...

Spatiotemporal dynamics of biogenic Si (silicium) pools in initial soils and their relevance for desilication (Project)
...Starting with a characterization of soils’ initial state at catchment scale we will analyze the annual SiO2 production of the vegetation as a function of (i) spatial distribution of plant available Si in soils as well as (ii) dynamics of invading Si accumulators. ...After four vegetation periods, changes in soils’ phytogenic Si pool will be compared to cumulative SiO2 production of Si accumulators by mass balance calculations. ...For the first time, the attempt will be made to quantify the zoogenic Si pool size by analyzing living and dead amoebae with Energy-dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy combined with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM-EDX). ...
