Collaborative project: Development of allomultigerm-pills as an agrotechnical innovation to increase the desirability of slow growing crops - subproject 1 (Project)

...Allomultigermpills are a combination of a weak germinating target-species (e.g Arnica montana, Taraxacum koksaghyz) with a strong germinating nurse-species (e.g. ...Field establishment was successful only for certain target-species (e.g. Taraxacum koksaghyz, Eragrostis tef). The characterization of a Lupinus angustifolius mutant-collection identified upright, reduced foliage, low-competetive dwarf-types as principally suited nurse-plants. ...

Investigation of the impact of cultivation conditions on quality and safety of fruit and vegetables (Project)

...A focus is on new technologies, i.e. controlled environment cultivation and soilless cultivation systems (vertical/indoor farming, hydroponics, aeroponics) using artificial light (i.e. different light qualities and intensities generated by LED). These farming systems are emerging in Europe and are being used for crops such as lettuce and herbs, perspectively also for fruits (e.g. strawberries) and other special crops. The chemical and microbial safety of products from those systems thus needs to be assessed. ...

Investigations on the genetic mechanisms of flower development in apple (Project)

...In the frame of the present project the apple homologs of the flowering genes TERMINAL FLOWER1 (TFL1), CONSTANS (CO) and SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS1 (SOC1) and the dormancy associated MADS box gene MdDAM4 will be deeply characterized....

Regulation of the cone crop wilting in organic elder farming (Project)

...A cut of 50% of the blossoms decreased the infestation from 23% to 7%. At the same time the harvest decreased only by 30% equalized by higher corymb weights....

Multiplex phOtonic sensor for pLasmonic-based Online detection of contaminants in milK (Project)

...Specifically, we aim at realizing multiplexing quantitative detection of up to 10 analytes among which food safety parameters, e.g. antibiotics (i.e. penicillin, ampicillin, cephalonium) and toxins (i.e. mycotoxins and bacterial toxins) and food quality parameters e.g. lactoferrin and caseins by implementing a highly-integrated optoplasmonic-microfluidic sensor in the strategic checkpoints along the entire supply and value chain of milk. ...The inherent versatility of the sensor guarantees disruptive effectiveness in multiple real settings applications, i.e. as automated sensor integrated in milking machine as handheld reusable analytical instrument for specialized and non-specialised milk operators. The effectiveness and market-placement of the engineered functional prototype is quantitatively evaluated by direct comparison with respect to standard analytical methods and commercially available optical biosensors....

Serological investigations on the susceptibility of selected bird species and mammals in natural outbreak areas of the avian influenza H5N1 infection (Project)

...At present, the infection of wild birds in Europe with the HPAIV H5N1 offers the extraordinary possibility to investigate the susceptibility to and the spread of the pathogen among the different bird and mammal species in the natural outbreak areas by targeted serological field studies. In addition to the investigation of different wild bird and waterfowl species for the presence of antibodies against the HPAIV H5N1, mammals will be analysed. H5N1 specific antibodies will be detected species-independent by competitive ELISA. ...

SafeGuard. Work package 2.3 LAMethicillin- Resistent-Staphylococcus-Aureus-(MRSA) in livestock (Project)

...While the Netherlands are classically regarded as a low prevalence country regarding the occurrence of MRSA in healthcare facilities, it has been documented that this is not the case for livestock-associated MRSA. In workpackage 2.3 it was documented that the problem of LA-MRSA involves both Dutch and German livestock holdings in a similar manner. However, some differences have been found, because molecular typing of the MRSA isolates obtained in the longitudinal studies and German prevalence investigations revealed an unequal distribution, e.g. of the LA-MRSA clone t108 on both sides of the border (predominance on the Dutch side of t108 and t034 on the German side). ...Since it was found (in contrast to previous investigations by other researchers) that MRSA carriage was rather persistent among farmers, it should be recommended to perform active decolonisation treatments prior to special risk interventions (e.g. surgical procedures), because it is unlikely that colonisation will “clear” spontaneously. ...

Collaborative project: Novel approach for the development of a heterosubtypic marker vaccine against avian influenza in poultry – Subproject 1 (following project) (Project)

...The most promising antigens are fragments of matrixprotein 2 (M2) and of hemagglutinin (HA). The first vaccine strains expressing M2 fragments induced antigen specific humoral and mucosal immunity in chicks. It is planned to express HA-antigens together with M2- fragments in the vaccine strain and to test subsequently, how good chicks are protected against HPAI-virus infection....
