SFB 564: F2.1 - Rural finance and sustainable rural development in Northern Vietnam (Project)
...The innovations expected to be identified and analysed in the sub-projects D, E, and F will require the financing of investments, operating costs and other expenditures for farms and SMEs. ...Depending on the character of the depending variable, OLS or Logit/Probit models will be applied. SP F2 is closely linked to research on farming systems (D3) which will identify the role of capital constraints in the existing farming systems and in adopting innovations. ...Findings of land tenure and property rights (F1) are crucial for credit access researched in F2. ...

Mechanistic investigation of the influence of potential ED in the model organism C. elegans (Project)
...The initial focus of this project is to map adverse effects of different potential ED in exposed individuals in suitable C. elegans test systems. For this purpose, already established assays (e.g. for size development and reproduction) are available in our laboratory, but further suitable tests are also being developed. Here, endpoints meeting two criteria are primarily addressed: 1. endpoints for which it was already described that they can be influenced by multigenerational and/or transgenerational exposure, and 2. endpoints for which it was already described that they are influenced by exposure to ED (independent of the exposure scenario). These endpoints include, for example, the alteration of fat content/metabolism of C. elegans. Based on expected ED effects in exposed individuals, the experiments will then be extended to multi- and transgenerational exposure scenarios. ...

Investigation of the effects of meat and dairy exports on African countries through an analysis of trade flows, production systems, value chains and consumer preferences in the meat and dairy sector, and derivation of policy recommendations for relevant stakeholders. (Project)
...In the first work package (M1-M2) we examine the extent and importance of imports of livestock products in Africa by analysing literature and data on trade flows. ...The third work package (M7-M32) deals with the question of how the value chains in the two African target countries are organised and how the product flows of domestic and imported products are organised. ...In the fourth work package (M1-M36) we examine the knowledge, attitudes, expectations and preferences of consumers in both target countries with regard to domestic and imported livestock products using quantitative methods. ...

Investigation of interactions between soil-borne sugar beet viruses and their effect on the rhizomania development (Project)
...The results showed, that in 62% of regions infested with soil-borne viruses infections are caused by a mix of Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), Beet soil-borne virus and Beet virus Q. ...Furthermore, methods have been developed to separate the different viruses starting from mixed-infected sugar beet plants and us Chenopodium quinoa and C. rubrum as differential hosts. Pure isolates were established and maintained. ...

Applications of flow cytometry in food microbiology (Project)
...The aim of the project is to adapt this methodology to the following, different questions.- WP1: Determination of absolute bacteria cell countsThe live-dead assay for the detection and enumeration of bacteria, as well as a determination of their physiological status, is well established. ...With some adaptations, we have successfully enumerated bacteria in various food matrices including meat juice and milk. - WP2: Bacteriophage as BiosensorsA fast and easy method to fluorescently tag bacteriophage has been established. ...Glucose uptake assays using fluorescent glucose analog 2-NBDG is still to be tested. Using the available assays on hand, various disinfection agents will be tested at suboptimal dosis to induce the VBNC state in L. monocytogenes.Initial attempts to use cell culture assays with human Caco-2 cells to detect infectiousness of L. monocytogenes were successful. ...

Breeding and agronomy of novel, low-vicine faba beans and adoption as domestic protein feed (Project)
...A novel winter-type faba beans will be bred which is low in (antinutritive) vicine/convicine (V+C). Botanical, genetic, breeding and agronomy issues of V+C will be solved. ...Defined faba beans will be employed, they include near-isogenic contrasts for normal vs. low vicine/convicine (V+C). Agronomy tasks (partner Schmidtke, Dresden): Map agro-meteorologically convenient sites for winterbeans; assess effect of V+C on resistance, N2-fixation and balance sheet, water uptake (incl. spring vs. winter types). Tasks in breeding and breeding research (partners Link & Sass): Development of a NIRS-calibration for V+C-breeding, breeding of a first novel low V+C-winterbean variety. ...
