LULUCF Implementation Guidelines and policy options (Project)

...The key reporting and accounting requirements under Articles 3(1), 3(2) and 3(3) of Decision No 529/2013/EU include: Mandatory reporting and accounting for GHG emissions/removals from afforestation, deforestation and reforestation (AD/R) and forest management (FM) which applies to each accounting period including 2013-2020 (Article 3(1)); A road map for improving the reporting and accounting systems for GHG emissions/removals associated with Cropland Management (CM) and Grazingland Management (GM), which will become mandatory from 1 January 2021 (Article 3(2)); Option on voluntary accounting for Revegetation (RV) and Wetland Drainage and Rewetting (WDR) (Article 3(3)). ...These options may include: setting up and upgrading the existing elements of reporting and monitoring systems in Member States, based on e.g. higher resolution data for representation of land, country-specific emission factors and more detailed methodologies that reflect the effects of mitigation actions; improving relevant information systems and processes, institutional capacity and training. ...

Collaborative project: Molecular and immunological analysis of survival and postnatal growth of piglets - subproject 1 (Project)

...In order to realize these aims, the project is divided into three subprojects: 1) Evaluation of genomic methods to improve individual birth weight and survival of piglets. 2) Genetic improvement of piglet vitality and survival as well as growth potential of growing pigs using immuno-profiling and genomic selection. 3) Verification of previously identified genomic regions and corresponding biological pathways which are involved in the regulation of piglet survival and immuno-response. Activities are scheduled as follows: 1) Quantitative analysis of historical data comprising birth weight and piglet survival of two maternal pig populations. 2) Recording of birth weight, immune parameters and survival along with corresponding genomic SNP-information of 1400 piglets together with their dams. 3) Genetic statistical analysis (genomwide association study, genomic selection) of recorded phenotype and genotype information. 4) Exact experiment with 24 litters from extreme matings in order to verify and validate previously identified genomic regions and pathway, which are relevant for immune response and piglet survival. 5) Next generation sequencing of discordant full sibs in order to validate and verify biological pathways relevant for immuno-competence....

Genome wide association studies to improve drought stress tolerance in Ethiopian wheat (Triticum durum) and barley (Hordeum vulgare) accessions (Project)

...Based on these results easy to handle molecular markers will be developed for combining positive alleles for drought stress which will be used to introgress drought stress tolerance in adapted Ethiopian barley and durum wheat cultivars. 250 barley and 250 wheat (T. durum) genotypes will be selected by the Ethiopian partner and genotyped using the 90k iSelect chip of wheat and the 9k iSelect chip of barley. The 250 wheat and barley genotypes will be phenotyped in Ethiopia and in growth chamber experiments in Germany. ...

Capacity Development for forest-related Greenhouse Gas Inventories (CD REDD II) (Project)

...This project will allow all participating developing countries to compile a GHG Inventory following the IPCC Tier1 approach. In the near future, in combination with the monitoring systems under development, countries will be able to compile GHG Inventories also at IPCC Tier2 or Tier3 levels. ...The project’s capacity-building approach to develop GHG inventories was based on the lessons learnt from previous and recent activities carried out by other technical cooperation agencies (e.g., USA-EPA, UNDP, GIZ etc) and supervised by the UNFCCC Secretariat. ...

Multiple Stressors on North Sea Life (Project)

...Using high-resolution models, we aim to better understand the combined impacts of climate change and human uses on the southern North Sea. The MuSSeL project combines geophysical with novel theoretical models to identify hot spots of change.Seabed life in the southern North Sea is exposed to both geophysical changes and growing human activities. How climate change, fisheries and offshore wind farms affect the good ecological status of the seabed and the diversity and functioning of benthic communities, and which risks are associated with this, is so far largely unknown. The MuSSeL project combines geophysical models with novel theoretical concepts and use scenarios to assess impacts for the past (1980), present and future (2050) and to identify hot spots of change. MuSSeL combines the expertise of research institutions and federal agencies to synthesise anthropogenic stressors such as nutrient inputs, chemical pollution, dredging, landfilling and bottom fishing. ...

Regulation, ecophysiology, and kinetic parameters of uncultured N-gas flux associated anaerobic microbial communities in agricultural soils (Project)

...Denitrifiers (reducing N-oxides to N2O and/ or N2), non-denitrifying N2O-reducers (reduce N2O to N2), and dissimilatory nitrate reducers (DNRA; reduce N-oxides to NH4+) are facultative or obligate anaerobes that impact the emission of the greenhouse gas N2O as well as retention of nitrogen. ...(ii) Gene expression and community structure associated with denitrification, N2O-reduction and DNRA reflect metabolic states and potentials, thus increasing predictability of N2O and N2 fluxes. ...Functional genes of denitrifiers (nirK/S encoding nitrite reductases yielding NO; nosZI encoding N2O reductase yielding N2), non-denitrifying N2O reducers (nosZII encoding N2O reductases yielding N2), and DNRA (nrfA encoding nitrite reductases yielding NH4+), will be primarily analysed. ...
