...At present, inactivated H5 whole virus vaccines are the only possibility to protect domestic poultry from H5N1 infections. Under experimental conditions with low numbers of (SPF) animals, these vaccines showed an acceptable efficacy against challenge infections. Field experiences (e.g. from Italy and Mexico), however, indicated considerable problems with application in large animal holdings. ...The project consists of the following parts: The pilot study is the basis for a further assessment of the vaccination with conventional inactivated AIV H5 and H7 vaccines.
