Relationships between feed quality, milk yield and health of dairy cows in organic farming systems (Project)

...The objectives of this study are (1) to further develop management programs and (2) to construct and evaluate current recommendations of advisory services. Objective (1) is pursued in a continuous on-farm process by experts of the Chamber for Agriculture of North Rhine-Westphalia. To achieve objective (2), the whole set of data on feeding and performance of dairy cows is evaluated using adequate statistical methodology with the goal to derive generalisable results and conclusions, which can then be communicated to consultants and finally transferred into farming practice....

FitforCows - a digital training tool to improve animal welfare in cows (Project)

...The aim of the FitforCows – e-learning and app project is to improve animal welfare in dairy cows. ...The aim is on the one hand to develop an e-learning FitforCows (TP 1), which is freely available after registration for the agricultural qualification, and on the other hand a corresponding smartphone app FitforCows (TP 2) for practical use in the cowshed (basic version for free). ...A parallel work package is the development of all e-learning modules for the different target groups. ...

Ration and capability of different origins for organic broiler production (Project)

...The feeding regimes are different in (reduced) energy content (starter feed 12,0 MJ ME/kg vs 11,0 MJ ME/kg; finishing feed 12,4 MJ ME/kg vs 11,2 MJ ME/kg) along with a lower content of essential Amino Acids (AA) - at a constant ratio of amino acid:metabolizable energy (AA:ME). ...

SFB 564: D2.1 - Efficiency of smallholder animal husbandry depending on intensity of management and genetic potential of livestock in mountainous regions of Northern Vietnam (Project)

...Information on production conditions (e.g. fodder availability and market access) intensity levels (e.g. utilisation of livestock species, genotypes and external inputs) and different production aims (reflected in management strategies, extraction rates and market integration) will be collected. ...Close methodological and in-situ co-operation (selection of study sites and farms, data collection and analysis) will be institutionalised with subprojects D3 (Sustainability of mountain farming systems) and C2 (Ecological assessment of barren hills). Information on actual and potential market production and integration will be generated together with subproject E3 (Market potential of high-value agricultural products). ...Experiences on potential and limitations of participatory research methods will be exchanged with subproject A1 (Potentials and constraints of participatory research approaches)....

Collaborative project: Development of innovative vaccines for poultry for simplified application (innoVAK4DART) - Subproject 1 (Project)

...By using alternative application methods, priming and booster vaccinations will be cheaper and easier to perform, thus broadening the number of species being able to be vaccinated by these new methods (e.g. broilers). This will lead directly to a reduction in antibiotic usage and therefore to a reduced selective pressure on the microflora in birds and the surrounding environment. ...The project consists of three main work packages: 1. improvement in the diagnostics of resistant strains with regard to epidemiological units, 2. development of next-generation autogenous vaccines, and 3. establishment of alternative application methods for autogenous vaccines. ...

Development and validation of a quality assurance system for mobile NIRS systems for measuring nutrient concentrations in liquid farm manures (Project)

...This is a requirement of the federal state authorities responsible for all aspects related to use of fertilizers in order to be able to permit the use of NIR sensors for documentation purposes within the framework of legal regulations (e.g. the German fertilizer ordinance). While for new NIR sensors a quality check according to the DLG test procedure is a prerequisite for market access, there is no QA system available for those devices already in use. The aim of the NIRS-QS project is (1) to define the requirements for such a QA system, (2) to develop and test the necessary procedural steps and (3) to establish a hands-on approach for teaching materials and working instructions as well as multimedia training materials for users....

Agroforestry reinvented: agroecological, nutrition-sensitive intensification of vegetable production under fruit trees in Western and Eastern Africa (Project)

...Agroecological intensification through agroforestry systems (i.e. species-rich combinations of trees and crops) can concurrently address the global challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and malnutrition. ...In five work packages the project addresses the monitoring of sustainability challenges along selected value chains (WP1); on-station (WP2) and on-farm testing (WP3) of arbo-market gardens with innovative solar-powered and digital technologies to increase productivity while reducing manual labour, production costs and use of agrochemicals; co-learning and training on agroecological practices and innovations (WP4); and coordination and outreach (WP5)....

BMEL - Research Cooperation for Global Foodsecurity (Funding programme)

...This funding instrument has the following main objectives: 1) The development of approaches for improved and sustainable food security. 2) The exploration of solutions along the value chain. 3) The involvement of relevant partners according to the research topic and the needs in the target country or target region. Here, the research consortium should also provide interfaces to partners in the field of development, to governmental organisations and NGOs. 4) Approaches and findings from research projects have to be integrated into regional development processes, e.g. through cooperation with regional networks and research fora. 5) Besides research, also tasks in the area of capacity development and information and knowledge management will be supported. 6) Ths instrument aims at contributing towards the realisation of activities in terms of the MDG’s and the post -2015 development agenda....

Use of UV-C technology for the stabilization of wine (Project)

...The objectives are: - to adapt UV-C systems with the possibility to adjust the UV-C intensity for different wavelengths for the technical application in wine under consideration of fluid mechanics and energy efficiency. - to investigate the UV-C effect on microbiological and chemical stability in an extended wavelength spectrum. - to determine the inactivation kinetics of wine-relevant yeasts and bacteria - to investigate the influence of oenological parameters on the UV-C effect in wine and to formulate oenological strategies to increase UV-C effectiveness. - to investigate the transport stability of UV-C-treated wines. - a suitable UV-C system allows the inactivation of harmful organisms, in particular different Brettanomyces strains, in wine without affecting the quality of the wine. - The use of UV-C technology with variable wavelength has advantages for wine maturation and microbiological stability. - A scale-up of UV-C technology based on existing wine process technology is possible....
