Reduction of the ecological footprint of lamb meat through resource efficient and climate-friendly production (Project)
...To reach these goals the consortium should involve European and Turkish farms to address - beside the project management (work package WP1) - the following points. These are to: - analyse and increase the ecologic (incl. LCA, resource efficiency, biodiversity, land use) and economic parameters (WP 2), - evaluate the effects of management strategies on characteristics of meat quality and safety by e.g. meat analysis (WP 3), - identify the relations between management, animal welfare and health by health analysis of e.g. stress parameters (WP 4), - identify (social) barriers, to develop solutions to increase the competiveness as well as the management and political recommendations for the niche sector (WP 5), - present effectively the results and discuss them on workshops (WP6)...

Carbon and timber in German forests - improving projections of current and future CO2 stocks by coupling eco-physiological and empirical forest development models (Project)
...For this purpose a process-based forest model (4C) and an empirical forest simulator (WEHAM) are coupled to generate climate-sensitive growth functions that will be used to estimate the climate sensitivity of carbon and timber simulations, e.g. the WEHAM base scenario (which is currently used in policy, timber resource and forest management planning) will be evaluated under different regional climate scenarios (RCP2.6 to 8.5). ...

Elevation and management gradient in a German mountain area to estimate shifts in an forest oekosystem under the aspect of climate change. Coordination (Project)
...In an altitude gradient in the Bavarian Forest from 300 to 1400 m above sea level, the forest structure, various species groups (from plants, fungi and animals) and genetic markers some species are investigated in a gradient of 2.9 to 8.1 ° C. In addition to sample areas in strict forest reserves that have not been managed for more than 40 years, managed forests also included. ...The work is divided into four modules Module 1 Forest structure elevations on 48 test beds in eight natural forest reserves and corresponding test circles managed forests. ...Module 3 Mycorhizza fungal species will be detected on the basis of genotypic characterizations and Amplicon sequencing. ...

Sweet Sorghum : an alternative energy crop (SWEETFUEL) (Project)
...This project will breed for improved cultivars and hybrids of sorghum for temperate, tropical semi-arid and tropical acid-soil environments by pyramiding in various combinations, depending on region and ideotype, tolerance to cold, drought and acid (Al-toxic) soils; and high production of stalk sugars, easily digestible biomass and grain (WP 1-3). Molecular-genetic and physiological breeding support is given by WP4, and agro-ecological adaptation and sustainable practices are developed by WP5. Other WPs (6, 7, 8) provide for integrated technology and impact assessments including economics, dissemination and coordination. ...The duration of the project is 5 years....

Establishment of a harmonised method for testing resistance of rye to ergot (Claviceps purpurea) and to minimize alkaloid contamination (Project)
...Rye is grown in the EU on 2.1 million hectares, more than 80% in Germany, Poland, and Austria. ...Specific innovation targets of this project are to analyze (1) ergot resistance across Germany, Poland, and Austria in a standardized field design, (2) the effect of isolates from these countries, (3) the relative importance of factors affecting ergot infections, (4) the variation of ergot alkaloids across sites/year/countries, (5) and use an ELISA test method for determing the total alkaloid content....

Development of a molecular diagnostic for sustainable and resource-efficient production of the renewable resource potato starch. Subproject 1 (Project)
...The following results have been achieved in the reporting period: WP1 Development of molecular markers for resistance to pathotypes 1,2,6,18: Extensive resistance tests were performed for the following groups of material: a) Potato varieties with known resistance spectrum: The inoculum for the tests of 47 varieties with multiple resistance, 50 varieties with P1 resistance, 50 varieties with P1 susceptibility and 80 wild species with unknown resistance or susceptibility to potato wart disease was increased for all four pathotypes (in total 15,900 warts). b) Segregating populations: 24 genotypes were infected with pathotype 1 and 18 genotypes with P18, seedling tissue was taken after 2, 7, 14 and 21 days and frozen, then shipped to partner LUH. c) Crossing populations with other donors of resistance: The parents of each crossing populations were tested with all four pathotypes (588 tubers). 150 genotypes of the population Panda x L04 were tested with 20 tubers on pathotype 18 and the distribution of the means was calculated. WP 3+4: Identification of candidate genes by proteom analysis of the infection course and mechanism of infestation course: JKI (AG Flath) has provided the partner LUH with P18 infected tuber material at regular intervals....
